Ceiling and Roof Leak Water Damage Cleanup
A wet ceiling is often only the visible part of the problem. Insulation above it can hold water for days and keep soaking drywall.

Common causes of ceiling leaks
- Storm damaged or worn roofing and failed flashing
- Ice dams that force meltwater under shingles
- Clogged gutters and roof drains
- Air conditioner drain lines and condensation
- Plumbing above the ceiling, including upstairs bathrooms
Safety first
A bulging, sagging ceiling can drop without warning and water can sit above light fixtures. Stay out from under it, switch off power to that area at the breaker if you can do so safely, and put a bucket beneath any active drip. Poking a small hole to release trapped water can relieve pressure, but only do it if you can stand clear and catch the water.
What the cleanup involves
Crews remove wet insulation and ceiling material, dry the framing, check the attic for moisture and look for the source. Roof repair is a separate trade. Ask for a roofer or plumber to fix the cause, otherwise the leak returns.
Document for your insurer
Take photos of the stain, the damaged ceiling and the roof area if you can see it from the ground. Keep receipts for tarps and temporary repairs. Many policies expect reasonable steps to prevent more damage.

Frequently asked questions
Will insurance cover a roof leak?
Storm damage is commonly covered. Leaks from wear and tear or poor maintenance often are not. Your adjuster will look at the cause.
How long before mold starts?
Mold can begin growing within one to two days on materials that stay wet, so attic insulation and drywall should be dried promptly.
Can I just paint over the stain?
Not until the source is fixed and everything is dry. Painting over a damp area traps moisture and hides ongoing damage.
